All of the birds were dynamic, but Montoya was the one who really grabbed my attention. While the comics version of Montoya is younger than actress Rosie Perez, I love that the movie aged her up. While it’s often true that comic fans hate it when characters are changed for the movies, in this case, it helped broaden the perspectives onscreen, and Perez absolutely crushed the role.

When I saw the Birds of Prey preview poster months earlier, I assumed that Montoya would be pushed to the background as more of a mother figure. Hollywood never puts women in their fifties front and center during action movies. To my pleasant surprise, Renee Montoya was just as prominent as the other Birds…and did her own share of butt-kicking. It was a refreshing change from the Hollywood norms, and best of all, they nailed Montoya’s characterization.

Like her comic book counterpart (more on her later) Renee struggled to prove herself to a police department of men, where she was overlooked because she was a woman, a lesbian and Hispanic. Her life isn’t going well and Renee has resorted to drinking. Remember Harley’s reaction when Montoya showed up to the final battle drunk? It’s a good thing she sobered up fast, because she fought like a badass.

During the ending montage, we see Montoya take a sip from her flask as she quits her job. The movie ends without a resolution to Montoya’s struggle with alcoholism, and that’s okay. Alcoholism is a serious problem that can take years to solve, and it doesn’t just go away after two hours. Defeating Black Mask and standing up to her superiors doesn’t mean all of Montoya’s problems are over, and that’s one reason why her story stuck with me.

It was so important to me that the Birds of Prey movie got Montoya right because of her legacy in both comics and animation. Like her co-star Harley Quinn, Montoya also got her start on Batman: The Animated Series, but with an interesting twist. DC’s publishing team learned about the young Latina police officer that would be featured in the cartoon and they loved the idea, so DC decided to add Renee Montoya to their comic continuity. Animation takes a long time to produce, which meant that even though Renee began in animation, Bat-Fans first met Montoya in the pages of Batman #475 months before she made her Batman: The Animated Series debut in the episode “Pretty Poison.”

On the series, Montoya played the straight person while her partner Harvey Bullock was the buffoon, resulting in some great comedic moments. While Montoya wasn’t featured as heavily as other female characters like Batgirl or Catwoman, she was a great example of a strong character, and her contribution to Batman: The Animated Series is often underrated and overlooked. Watch her in the episode “Harley and Ivy” where she takes down Poison Ivy and Harley Quinn, something that even Batman and the Joker couldn’t do. Pay close attention to her during the episode “Holiday Knights.” Montoya comes off as brave, assertive and creative. She may have been a minor character on the show, but she was fleshed out into a fully realized person.

Most of Montoya’s best comic book moments come from a series called Gotham Central. Readers, I am not exaggerating when I say that Gotham Central is one of the greatest comic series ever produced. It won numerous awards, including an Eisner for Best Serialized Story, and was a heavy inspiration for the television show Gotham (at least the first, earliest?season). Gotham Central, written by Greg Rucka and Ed Brubaker and drawn by an art team that included Michael Lark and Stefano Gaudiano, is a gritty look at life in the Gotham City Police Department. It focuses on how the officers of the GCPD solve crimes and deal with government bureaucracy without Batman.

During the series, readers learned that Montoya was a lesbian, and unfortunately, she wasn’t outed on her own terms.? Two-Face had fallen in love with Montoya and thought she would return his affections if she had nowhere else to go. Two-Face attempted to destroy Renee’s life by outing her, and he succeeded. Photographs of Renee with her girlfriend Daria were posted around the GCPD, humiliating her. Renee’s religious family did not accept her sexuality, which deeply wounded her. Like I said folks, sh*t got real over in Gotham Central. Like her movie counterpart, Renee didn’t always get a happy ending.

After Gotham Central ended and Renee quit the GCPD, her story continued in the maxi-series 52, where she was trained by Vic Sage and took on the mantle of the Question. The series is also notable for introducing an old flame of Renee’s named Kate Kane. Yes, THAT Kate Kane. As Renee was becoming the Question, her ex-girlfriend Kate became Batwoman. The two have occasionally partnered as vigilantes and are currently giving their relationship another shot.

We’ll see if it works out because after a whole lot of drama, Renee Montoya deserves a little happiness. For now, though, I’m calling Rosie Perez’s performance as her a big win. It’s been a long journey for this Bird with a badge, and I can’t wait to see where she goes next.

Birds of Prey (And the Fantabulous Emancipation of One Harley Quinn)?is now in theaters.?Click here to get tickets!

Joshua Lapin-Bertone writes about TV, movies and comics for DCComics.com and DCUniverse.com, is a regular contributor to the Couch Club and writes our monthly Batman column, "Gotham Gazette." href="http://www.geatzs.com/movies/birds-of-prey" target="_blank">Birds of Prey yet? How many of you have already seen it twice? I have so many thoughts about so many characters and moments, including the psychotic Black Mask. Of course, depending on how familiar you are with the character, one of your thoughts may be, “I wonder how close Black Mask was to the comics?”

Well, dear readers, it was pretty darn close! Certain liberties are usually taken when it comes to adapting villains in comic book movies, and while there were certainly some taken here, Ewan McGregor does a pretty good job bringing the classic Gotham City crime boss to life.

During the movie, it’s stated that Roman Sionis (Black Mask’s real name) has been kicked out of his family’s company, Janus Corp. How badly do you have to screw up to get kicked out of your own family’s business? Especially when that business is cosmetics.

Yep, cosmetics! Roman first appeared in Batman #386, where Roman sunk the family empire by pushing two revolutionary cosmetic products that ultimately wound up being horrible ideas. First, he conceived a face-paint style of makeup, putting all of Janus’s resources behind the product. The problem was that it looked like something a preschooler might’ve come up with in art class and nobody was buying it. Everybody makes mistakes, of course, so Roman moved on to the next idea—waterproof makeup. Wouldn’t it be great to visit Aquaman’s home in Atlantis without worrying about smearing your makeup?

I’m a DC fanboy, not a manufacturing guru, but even I know that you’re supposed to test a product before putting it on the market. Apparently not Roman, though. He rushed the launch of his waterproof makeup without testing and the results were disastrous. Technically, it was waterproof, but it also had this inconvenient tendency to cause the wearer’s skin to become burned and disfigured. Janus Corp had 437 lawsuits within a week, and the company was forced to accept a bailout from Bruce Wayne.

So, if you head to the theaters to see Birds of Prey again, keep this little backstory in mind when people talk about Roman’s failure at his family business. Are we really going to take cosmetic advice from a man who calls himself Black Mask?

Speaking of his choice of headgear, Roman’s daddy issues are also straight from the comics. Roman, level-headed epitome of maturity that he is, threw a fit one night when his parents refused to let him date a model, so he burned down their family mansion. A little bit of an overreaction, but this type of drama queen behavior is perfectly in line with Ewan McGregor’s onscreen behavior.

Roman’s parents died in the fire, but he continued to be haunted by their memories. After the cosmetic business went belly up, Roman visited their mausoleum when he was struck with an epiphany—he’ll become a crime boss. And to make sure he was properly respected in a city as hardened as Gotham, he crafted his signature black mask OUT OF PIECES OF HIS FATHER’S COFFIN! You’ll remember in the film that Harley told Roman he had daddy issues. Well, it turns out it’s worse than all of us thought. He’s literally wearing pieces of his father’s coffin on his face! I will never make fun of Batman’s devotion to his parents again.

Speaking of Batman #386, I want to call attention to a blurb on the cover. “Crazier than the Joker! Deadlier than Ra’s al Ghul!” the cover states. Some of you might be rolling your eyes and writing this off as hyperbole, but Black Mask is one messed up dude. Don’t forget the scene in the movie where he kills that family by cutting off their faces. Or the where he humiliates that woman at his nightclub because she laughed. Trust me, Roman’s depraved and yes, misogynistic mind is capable of far worse.

Let this be a warning for anyone choosing to read further—what I’m about to describe is gruesome. In Ed Brubaker’s iconic Catwoman run, Roman and Selina were fighting for control of Gotham’s East End neighborhood. Roman wanted to rule it, and Selina wanted to liberate it. Black Mask doesn’t fight fair though, so he kidnapped Selina’s sister Maggie and her husband Brian. In 2003’s Catwoman #15, Roman sadistically tortured them and enjoyed every minute of it. It wasn’t enough to make Maggie suffer physically—Black Mask wanted to break her mind. After killing her husband, Roman removed his eyeballs and forced them down Maggie’s throat.

That’s horrific, but Roman’s most notoriously evil act happened the following year. That scene in Birds of Prey where Roman has Harley tied up? If you noticed anyone in the theater who seemed particularly uneasy, it might be because they know Black Mask’s comic book history. During a Batman crossover event called “War Games,” Black Mask fought, defeated and chained up Stephanie Brown, after which he proceeded to torture her horrifically for what felt like ages before releasing her to die in Leslie Thomkins’ clinic. It was a shocking, totally unexpected moment, and while we learned later that Stephanie actually faked her death, Ronan is still known as the villain who murdered Spoiler.

You see, it’s not just that Black Mask kills people. Lots of villains do that. He very frequently tortures them before he does. He’s as sadistic as he is flamboyant, making him one of the most unnerving and unpredictable villains in Gotham.

If you’ve made it this far, I want to apologize for ruining your appetite. Harley Quinn might be a bit looney, but she’s a regular Girl Scout compared to Black Mask. In many ways McGregor’s Black Mask was a spot-on adaptation of the rich spoiled brat from the comics, right down to the chilling mask. If you head back to the theater to see Birds of Prey again, keep that in mind. And maybe double check who manufactures your makeup.
?

Birds of Prey (And the Fantabulous Emancipation of One Harley Quinn)?is now in theaters.?Click here to get tickets!

Joshua Lapin-Bertone writes about TV, movies and comics for DCComics.com and DCUniverse.com, is a regular contributor to the Couch Club and writes our monthly Batman column, "Gotham Gazette." their parents were brutally murdered, who eventually became Gotham's avenger? If your mind went straight to Bruce Wayne and Batman, that's not a shock, but the masked vigilante we were referencing was in fact Helena Rosa Bertinelli, otherwise known as Huntress.

While Huntress isn’t exactly an unknown character, it’s a fair bet that she’s going to become a lot more popular after her scene-stealing turn in Birds of Prey (And the Fantabulous Emancipation of One Harley Quinn). Played to perfection by Mary Elizabeth Winstead, the movie’s Helena is short on words, intimidating in action and has something of a brand-identity problem (if you’ve seen it, you know what we’re talking about). So, if you find yourself curious and wanting to know more about the Crossbow Ki—we mean Huntress, then you’re in the right place.

Created by Joey Cavalieri and Joe Staton, Helena Bertinelli was first introduced in 1989's The Huntress #1, which is slightly ironic as she was actually the third DC character to take on the mantle. Artist Stanton already had a connection to the lore of Huntress as he was the co-creator of the Helena Wayne version of the character alongside Paul Levitz, Joe Orlando and Bob Layton. While that version of the Huntress was the daughter of Batman and Catwoman, after the universe-streamlining events of Crisis on Infinite Earths, Helena Bertinelli was introduced without any connection to the Caped Crusader at all.

Though the grim streets of Gotham are mostly known for their weird, wonderful and often wacky inhabitants, Helena Bertinelli reflects a vital yet sometimes underserved part of Bat-lore. Gotham's organized crime syndicates have long been one of the most of the city's biggest and most insidious threats. While the Joker spreads fear via mass murder and mayhem, the mob destabilizes the city through dodgy deals, assassinations and wonton power grabs. But on one fateful day they messed with the wrong family and created a threat almost as big as themselves.

In the pages of The Huntress #1, readers discovered a despondent young girl who was the daughter of one of Gotham's most powerful organized crime families. The post-Watchmen comics landscape led to many creators exploring darker and more brutal stories, and Helena's was no different as when she was a child, she was kidnapped by an opposing mob boss, tortured and horrifically sexually assaulted all while she was only six years old. Years later, Helena would take on the mantle of Huntress after seeing her family killed in a mob assassination. Though her origin would change throughout her comic book career, the loss of her family would always be the driving force behind her transformation into the hero known as the Huntress.

The so-called New Earth version of Helena Bertinelli established the hallmarks of the character which would define her for decades. A highly trained assassin driven by revenge, an empathetic young woman traumatized by loss, and eventually a hero who turned her back on her gruesome past to become a force for good in Gotham. She even had a short-lived stint as Batgirl during the No Man's Land crossover event, but after failing to protect Gotham against a battalion of Batman's most famous villains, she retired from the Bat-Family and took back her own title of Huntress once again.

That wouldn't be the last time that Huntress teamed up with some of the city's biggest heroes, though. In fact, her eventual crime fighting collaboration with Barbara Gordon and Black Canary would make Helena Bertinelli's Huntress one of the most well-known heroes in the DC Universe (well, to comic readers, at least). As one of the core members of the iconic female superteam, the Birds of Prey, Helena became part a found family with Oracle taking Huntress and Canary under her proverbial wing. But Barbara's desperation to control and "fix" Helena led to conflict which would see Helena leave the team before confronting Babs and later rejoining as a fully-fledged and trusted member.

In 2014, after Flashpoint and The New 52 took Helena out of action for a few years, the hero’s path would change for good as she embarked on a new, unexpected career that would put her in the path of one of Gotham's most beloved sons. Just like Helena’s 1989 debut had thrown Gotham into a noir-inspired world of grim gangsters, Tim Seeley and Tom King's Grayson introduced readers to a slick spy-thriller centered around the mysterious agency, SPYRAL. Playing a key role in this complete shakedown of the status quo, Helena was no longer a masked vigilante and was instead one of Dick Grayson’s partners within the espionage organization, hiding from both her mob family and the crime fighting authorities of the world.

During her time at SPYRAL, Helena would strike up a still-referenced romance with Grayson and end up leading the agency after a series of betrayals and disasters that left the organization in dire straits. But after discovering the truth about her time with SPYRAL and helping Grayson defeat the puppetmaster behind it all, the heroine would put on the domino mask once again, reuniting with her former teammates in Batgirl and the Birds of Prey. This time, though, Babs was back working under her most famous mantle and the team was back protecting the city that had made them all heroes.

That more or less brings us to where we are now, at least as far as the comics are concerned. Helena has had a pretty great life outside of them, though. She appeared in several episodes of both Justice League Unlimited and Batman: The Brave and the Bold, including a Birds of Prey-influenced episode written by legendary Birds writer Gail Simone. And it’s not just been animation. Although we're about to see Helena make her big screen debut, Bertinelli's Huntress was previously brought to life by Jessica De Gouw in The CW's sprawling Arrowverse, while her Earth-2 counterpart, Helena Wayne (played by Ashley Scott), was the leader of the network's short lived Birds of Prey TV series.

Birds of Prey may offer the most true-to-the-comics version we’ve seen yet, however, complete with her brutal mob-world origin. We’ll have to see what future this version of the character may have beyond the Cathy Yan-directed movie. But whether Winstead’s take lives on or not—and we certainly hope it does, hopefully with the rest of the Birds along for the ride—there are plenty of other places to delve into the twisted psyche of one of Gotham's most brutal and brilliant heroes.
?

Birds of Prey (And the Fantabulous Emancipation of One Harley Quinn)?is now in theaters.?Click here to get tickets!

Rosie Knight writes about comics, movies and TV for DCComics.com and DCUniverse.com. From Sensation Comics #1 and the introduction of Wonder Woman all the way to Barbara Gordon's Batgirl, the ferocious Amanda Waller and the model-turned-vigilante Vixen. Even the DC rogues gallery has its share of astonishing ladies like Poison Ivy, Catwoman, Harley Quinn and lesser known foes like Livewire, Tarantula and Duela Dent. With such a massive roster of amazing female characters, it's not surprising that girl gangs within the DCU have a pretty storied history.

With Birds of Prey (And the Fantabulous Emancipation of One Harley Quinn), the cinematic world of DC takes on this established tradition and introduces it to the masses with an all-star cast and the slick directorial eye of Cathy Yan. As DC readers, we've been lucky enough to witness our fair share of badass super ladies teaming up over the years. It looks like the newest entry into the sprawling world of DC superhero movies will build on that legacy with a rad roster of powerful women who pay homage to the heroines who have come before while blazing a trail into the future.

Jack Kirby is one of comics' most iconic creators and in 1972 he crafted one of the most powerful super-teams of all time in the Female Furies. The cosmically powered New Gods warriors were trained by the notorious Granny Goodness to serve none other than Darkseid himself. Outwardly some of the most overpowered super-villains in the DC Universe, the Furies’ four-decade plus journey has paved the way for future complex (anti)heroines like Harley Quinn and Poison Ivy to go from villainous foe to strong, brilliant and occasionally heroic characters in their own right.

Over twenty years after the Furies’ debut, Chuck Dixon and Jordan B. Gorfinkel introduced a much less villainous successor with a new take on some classic heroines. Under the leadership of Barbara Gordon, who at the time was confined to a wheelchair and working as Oracle, Birds of Prey teamed the former Batgirl with Black Canary in a Gotham-based collective that would go on to feature an impressive selection of DC's strongest women. Though the team was created by two men, Gail Simone was the first woman to join the creative team and is seen as one of the most influential writers on the series. Simone’s contributions, alongside the contributions of others, helped to capture the hearts and minds of DC readers and creatives, inspiring multiple adaptations including the upcoming film.

Of course, many DC fans were wondering why Robbie and co. chose to go with the Birds of Prey for her movie rather than the Gotham City Sirens. After all, the Sirens is the team most directly connected to Harley Quinn in the comics. The answer can be found in the Birds’ often rotating roster. Star Margot Robbie has explained was a decision driven by the flexibility of the ever-changing collection of women who have been a part of the Birds of Prey.

The actor/producer's desire to introduce new characters to a wider audience meant that we haven't seen the Gotham City Sirens hit the screen yet, but seeing as it's a team that stars some of the most famous DC heroines, we probably won't have to wait too long. Created by Paul Dini and Guillem March, Gotham City Sirens saw Catwoman, Poison Ivy and Harley Quinn team up just in time to protect Gotham against the horrifying villain Hush.

Putting together the three iconic villainesses and crafting an anti-heroine super team was a radical move that harkened back to the creation of the Female Furies, while also establishing some of the core tenets of the trio that would define them going into the future. The now-beloved relationship between Harley and Ivy was first truly cemented here, while the team also got to face down with other strong female characters like Talia al Ghul and collaborate with some radical DC heroines like Zatanna.

Sometimes intriguing new female team-ups would build on male-centered ones that came before. Reimagining one of the most famous teams in the universe, 2012's Worlds’ Finest replaced Batman with his Earth-2 daughter Huntress and Superman with his alt-universe cousin Power Girl. It was a slick and smart reboot of the beloved DC title which would help seed The CW's World's Finest team of Batwoman and Supergirl.

Importantly, though, it's not just classic teams that have been reinvented to radicalize the women of DC. In 2015, Bombshells brought DC Collectibles’ popular line of 1950s-inspired statues to the realm of comics. Though it would have been easy for the tie-in line to be nothing more than a light read to sell statues, writer Marguerite Bennett turned the Bombshells into Nazi-fighting war heroes who were no longer legacy characters but iconic and original heroes in their own right.

The long tradition of accomplished female-led teams in the DC Universe is indisputable and inspiring. That Birds of Prey incorporates some new additions into the classic cast of characters is simply following in the footsteps of all the comics that came before. We can't wait to see just how the new Birds of Prey adds to the canon of powerful female DC heroes. Who knows? If you are, it’s hopefully a result of our recent casting news and not an actual, physical injury. Still, Harley Quinn’s here to ensure that if there do happen to be any objects orbiting around your head, they’re birds.

Yes, birds. As in Birds of Prey and the Fantabulous Emancipation of One Harley Quinn, the upcoming DC movie in which Margot Robbie returns to the role that made her a DC Extended Universe star. The 2020 film released its first poster today, which features a dazed looking Quinn surrounded by small, winged versions of the movie’s cast. It’s a fun, colorful concept that reminds us that when it comes to getting stuff done, Harley Quinn’s always preferred to wing it.

Roll call! Circling Harley’s noggin from left to right is Rosie Perez as Renee Montoya, Chris Messina as Victor Zsasz, Mary Elizabeth Winstead as Huntress, Ewan McGregor as Black Mask, Robbie as Harley, Jurnee Smollett-Bell as Black Canary and Ella Jay Basco as?Cassandra Cain.

Along with the poster, Birds of Prey also launched their social channels, so be sure to follow them on Twitter, Facebook and Instagram for all of the latest news, images and trailers from the eagerly awaited movie. Birds of Prey and the Fantabulous Emancipation of One Harley Quinn lands in theaters February 7, 2020. In the meantime, let us know what you think of the poster…and what your favorite bird is! (We’re big fans of Robins over here, but that’s kind of to be expected.)

Tags:

birds of prey, birds of prey poster, birds of prey and the fantabulous emancipation of one harley quinn, birds of prey movie, harley quinn, harley quinn movie, harley quinn poster, margot robbie, black canary, jurnee smollett-bell, huntress, mary elizabeth winstead, black mask, ewan mcgregor, Cassandra Cain, ella jay basco, chris messina, Victor Zsasz, rosie perez, Renee Montoya, dc films, dc movies, dceu, dc extended universe, warner bros.

Reader CTA:

Read Now

Article Header Layout:

Standard Layout

Tue, 17 Sep 2019 19:45:43 +0000 Tim Beedle 448139 at http://www.geatzs.com http://www.geatzs.com/blog/2019/09/17/birds-of-prey-takes-wing-in-its-fabulous-first-poster#comments 两个人做人爱视频大全-两人做人爱费视频试看
