Dark and gritty stories inspired by the worlds of Watchmen and The Dark Knight Returns have long been seen as the peak of superhero storytelling. Of course, those seminal narratives are valid and their impact can still be seen today. But the new DCTV series Stargirl is offering up something different. A little light in the dark, a spark of joy in the strange and scary landscape of 2020. In a world that desperately needs it, Stargirl opens a hopeful and bright new chapter in the DCTV universe.

First introduced in 1999's Stars and S.T.R.I.P.E. #0 by Geoff Johns and Lee Moder, the heroic teen Stargirl was inspired by the writer's late sister, Courtney. This personal origin story is key to the joy and hope that Stargirl represents and is part of the reason that the series works so well.

If you’ve never checked out the series where she debuted, the pilot works as a great comics accurate intro. Courtney Whitmore is just an average, everyday teenager, but her life has been haunted by the disappearance of her already absent dad years before. She has, like many teens, managed to gain a semblance of normalcy despite the troubles of her past. That is, until her mother, Barbara, and stepfather, Pat Dugan, move the family from LA to Blue Valley, Nebraska.

It's a twist on the tragic backstories that so many of our favorite heroes have. See, Courtney (Brec Bassinger) has lost a lot, but not everything. In fact, one of the most hopeful and resonant threads that shines through the action-packed premiere is how much love she still has in her life.

Speaking of that action, despite the family-centric story, Stargirl also presents a world filled to the brim with an impressive roster of DC characters. In an opening that’s one of the best I've ever seen, Starman and the Justice Society of America battle the Injustice Society. Sadly, despite the efforts of Starman's sidekick, Stripsey, the JSA lose their fight. This loss defines Courtney's future, not least because her stepfather Pat is Stripsey.

Or rather, he was. Yep, Pat (Luke Wilson) is a retired superhero. Well, a superhero's sidekick. And as you can imagine, the cross-country move might not be as agendaless as we all first suspected. Courtney's obsession with her missing father means that she's never been particularly interested in Pat or his relationship with her mom, but that all changes when she finds a strange, glowing and magical artifact in the basement of their new home.

We all dream of becoming a hero, and on a base level Stargirl plays into that fantasy. But the team behind it is more interested in crafting a larger dream world. It's a space where a chosen or unconventional family is just as important and loving as biological ones. Where classic Golden Age heroes can be reimagined as young diverse kids, and where a young girl can bring hope to a hopeless world.

I know that I keep mentioning this word hope. That's because coming away from the gorgeous, funny, well-written and engaging first episode, that's how I felt—hopeful. Hopeful for Courtney and her burgeoning relationship with her stepfather. Hopeful for the fate of the uncanny little town of Blue Valley, Nebraska. Hopeful that this show could bring a smile to the faces of families stuck at home due to the current global pandemic. Hopeful that Stargirl and her friends might just become the face of a whole new DCTV universe. One that's driven by hope rather than tragedy, filled with young talent and unexpected Hollywood stars doing something completely new.

In a dark and often overwhelming world, Stargirl blazes a trail for what's right and what's good. But as a hero, Stargirl is also relatable. She's scared, sad, flawed, excited and terrified. Bassinger's Courtney acts exactly how you think a real teenager with powers would, which is part of what makes her performance so exhilarating. It helps that she's surrounded by other stellar actors like Wilson, who feels like he was specially made for the role of the reluctant sidekick, Pat. Sarcastic, downtrodden, but ultimately willing to do the right thing, he has lost just as much as Courtney.

Although it may take them a while to realize it, it's that trauma and loss that drives both of the heroes to become the best versions of themselves. And of course, they're stronger when they face the things that could harm them and those they love together. That message is delivered with a light touch, but it's an engaging narrative that we could all do well to learn from right now.?

New episodes of Stargirl debut Mondays on DC Universe and Tuesdays at 8 p.m. (7 p.m. CST) on The CW.?Visit our official Stargirl page?for more news, videos and features on DC's newest small screen hero.

Rosie Knight writes about comics, movies and TV for DCComics.com. In 1999, Geoff Johns created Courtney Whitmore as a tribute to his late sister, and Stargirl has since gone on to become one of the DC Universe’s most endearing characters. To know her is to love her. So, let's get to know her!

Her Series Has an All-Star Cast

There are plenty of reasons to be excited for the Stargirl series, especially after you get a look at its all-star (no pun intended) cast! Luke Wilson will be portraying Courtney’s stepfather Pat Dugan; and yes, he will be piloting S.T.R.I.P.E. Amy Smart will play Courtney's mom Barbara. Lou Ferrigno Jr, son of the legendary Hulk actor, will be bringing Hourman to life. Henry Thomas, best remembered for his role as Elliot in E.T., will be playing Doctor Mid-Nite. Need more? How about Joel McHale as Starman? If you’re a Justice Society fan, you’ll be seeing lots of familiar heroes and villains.

She Wasn’t Always Called Stargirl

You remember what it’s like to be a teenager. Sometimes you try out different personas to see what fits. When Courtney Whitmore first suited up in Stars and S.T.R.I.P.E. #1 she decided to call herself the Star-Spangled Kid. Initially Courtney had worn the outfit to annoy her stepdad (who was once the superhero Stripesy), but when her school dance was invaded by criminals, she leapt into action and a new hero was born.

To everyone’s surprise, Courtney excelled at superheroics. She even caught the attention of Jack Knight, who passed on his Cosmic Staff to Courtney when he retired the Starman identity. By 2003’s JSA: All Stars #4, Courtney decided that she had outgrown her old codename and chose to honor the legacy of the heroes who inspired her by taking on the name Stargirl! Some teenagers change their profile pictures or usernames on a weekly basis, but Courtney knows a good name when she sees it. Stargirl has remained her moniker to this day.

She’s Been a Part of Some Powerhouse Teams

Courtney Whitmore can be described many ways, and shy isn’t one of them. She’s a social butterfly, making friends wherever she goes, and that includes the superhero community. Initially, she fought crime alongside her stepfather Pat Dugan, who piloted a giant battlesuit called S.T.R.I.P.E. Having your stepdad follow you around on patrol can cramp your style, but it actually helped the two of them bond.

Later, Jack Knight vouched for Courtney and encouraged the Justice Society to let her join the group in 1999’s JSA #4. Stargirl quickly bonded with the group and found herself a mentor in Power Girl. She also made the cut for the Justice League in 2013’s Justice League of America #2. Most teen heroes would be lucky to get an internship with the Legionnaires or the Teen Titans, but Stargirl has an all-access pass to some of the biggest teams in the DC Universe!

She Has a Good Dental Plan

Being a superhero is hard enough, but don’t forget Courtney is also a teenager, which comes with its own set of problems. Courtney deals with many of the trials and tribulations of adolescence, including braces. How many superheroes can you think of that have a mouth full of braces? Courtney was mortified to receive hers in Stars and S.T.R.I.P.E. #2 and tried to hide her new smile from her Blue Valley High classmates. It’s so embarrassing, it just makes you want to die!

Most of Courtney’s friends and superhero allies thought her smile was still beautiful, but she wasn’t having it. She looked forward to the day she could get her braces off, and the entire Justice Society wanted to be there to support her. Naturally, Stargirl was mortified when they all accompanied her to the orthodontist appointment in 2009’s Justice Society of America #26. Even worse, Courtney was told that her braces would have to remain for another year. Bummer! Don’t worry, Stargirl, Halo was also embarrassed by her braces too.

She’s Been in Another DC Universe Series

If you’re a DC Universe subscriber, there’s another place you can find Courtney Whitmore. The camera-ready character can be seen throughout the season in Young Justice: Outsiders, where she is played by DC Daily host Whitney Moore. The Young Justice version of Courtney is a bit older, and hosts her own entertainment show, appropriately titled “Stargirl.” Although she isn’t a superheroine yet, there’s no telling what fate future seasons hold for her.

If you’re hungry for more animated takes on Stargirl, check out the Justice League Unlimited episode “Patriot Act” and the Batman: The Brave and the Bold episode “Cry Freedom Fighters.”
?

Keep your eyes on both DCComics.com and DCUniverse.com for more Stargirl news and features. In the meantime, if you want more Courtney, be sure to grab the new Stargirl by Geoff Johns collection that’s in stores tomorrow. only days remaining before DC’s STARGIRL premieres on DC UNIVERSE, the digital subscription service revealed today a set of images that showcase the series’ heroes and villains in their supersuits! From villains like Icicle and Brainwave to heroes including Doctor Mid-Nite, Wildcat, Hourman, S.T.R.I.P.E. and Stargirl herself, these never-before-seen images give fans a first look at the costumes each character will wear while in action. Created by DC’s STARGIRL costume designer Laura Jean Shannon, the supersuits are inspired by the original comic books and embrace the classic old-school characters from Geoff Johns’ 1999 series. Fans can check out the official images below.

Beginning May 18, DC UNIVERSE members will be the first to stream new episodes of DC’s STARGIRL, every Monday commercial-free in downloadable 4K Ultra HD. Additionally, members will have access to several exclusive offerings, including extended versions of select episodes, behind-the-scenes footage of cast and crew, exclusive collectible pins and limited-edition posters, DCU’s fan community forum to discuss the latest episodes and access to all the comics that inspired the series.

From original creator and comic book writer Geoff Johns (executive producer of “Titans”, “Arrow,” “Batwoman,” and “The Flash”), DC’S STARGIRL follows high school sophomore Courtney Whitmore (Brec Bassinger) as she moves to Blue Valley, Nebraska after her mother remarries Pat Dugan (Luke Wilson) and inspires an unlikely group of young heroes to stop the villains of the past. The live-action superhero drama reimagines the 1999 Stargirl comics and the very first superhero team, the Justice Society of America, in an unpredictable series. DC’S STARGIRL is lovingly inspired by Johns’ late sister, who was killed in a plane accident.

For more information on DC UNIVERSE and DC’s STARGIRL, fans can visit https://www.dcuniverse.com/stargirl/ and DCU’s Facebook, Twitter, and Instagram pages.

DCU’s DC’S STARGIRL will premiere on Monday, May 18, in advance of The CW broadcast on Tuesday, May 19.

For more information on DC’S STARGIRL or to sign up for the digital subscription service, fans can visit http://www.dcuniverse.com.

Tags:

dc universe, dc's stargirl, Geoff Johns

Reader CTA:

Read Now

Article Header Layout:

Standard Layout

Thu, 14 May 2020 14:00:00 +0000 DC Publicity 451695 at http://www.geatzs.com http://www.geatzs.com/blog/2020/05/14/dc-universe-reveals-exclusive-character-supersuit-images-from-stargirl#comments Figuring Out the Justice Society http://www.geatzs.com/blog/2020/05/12/figuring-out-the-justice-society

<?php echo $entity->type; ?>

Figuring Out the Justice Society

Joshua Lapin-Bertone

Tuesday, May 12, 2020 - 10:00

It’s May, and that means we’re approaching the premiere of Stargirl, DC’s next live action series. There are plenty of reasons to get excited for this latest small screen endeavor and one of them is that the Justice Society of America promises to factor in pretty heavily. Of course, if you don’t know who the Justice Society are, there’s no need to worry, I’ve got you covered. In fact, you might be surprised to learn that you already know some of the team’s members!

The most obvious question—and one that NO ONE should ever feel bad about asking—is what’s the difference between the Justice Society and the Justice League?

The simplest answer is that the Justice Society came first. The Justice Society of America, or JSA for short, is the oldest group in the DC Universe, predating the Justice League by twenty years. Consider them the elder statesmen of the DC Universe, especially since some of their heroes fought in World War II. That doesn’t mean they’re all boomers either. Although the Justice Society has some of the DC Universe’s oldest heroes, their roster also has a few teenagers like Stargirl and Black Lightning’s daughter Lightning. That’s right Black Lightning fans, Jennifer Pierce is a proud JSA member.

Readers first met the JSA in 1940’s All-Star Comics #3. The founding members were….

The Spectre: A supernatural spirit of vengeance.

Green Lantern: Alan Scott, the original Golden Age Lantern.

The Flash: Jay Garrick, the original Scarlet Speedster.

Sandman: A pulp-style mystery-man with a sleeping gun.

Johnny Thunder: A young man with a genie-like entity called Thunderbolt.

Hourman: A brilliant chemist who created a super-strength formula.

Dr. Fate: A sorcerer with a mysterious helmet.

The Atom: Al Pratt, a weakling who trained to become a formidable fighter.

Hawkman: A winged warrior reincarnated from an Egyptian prince.

Do any of those heroes sound interesting to you? If so, keep your eyes open when Stargirl premieres, because you might see cameos by some of them. The JSA enjoyed immense popularity during DC’s Golden Age of Comics, until they were slowly retired. Even when they weren’t being published, however, their legacy could be felt. The Justice Society was the birth of the comic book superhero team, and we wouldn’t have the Justice League without them.

In 1961’s Flash #123, Jay Garrick made a comics history-making return to team up with Barry Allen, the new Flash. This iconic story, “Flash of Two Worlds,” established Earth-Two, a concept that would change the Justice Society—and the DC Universe—forever. This established that DC’s legacy of characters resided on different worlds within one multiverse. Jay Garrick and his Justice Society teammates inhabited Earth-Two, while Barry Allen and the newer Justice League called their home Earth-One. This led to 1963’s Justice League of America #21-22, the first team-up between the JSA and the JLA. The team-up story revolutionized the comic book industry, and for years it became an annual tradition. The JSA was back, and fans couldn’t get enough.

One reason that readers seemed to gravitate to the Justice Society was because they were allowed to do things the Justice League couldn’t. Since their adventures took place on an alternate Earth, writers had the freedom to age the members up, and some of them got married, had children, retired, or even died! More surprising still, at least at the time, was that after the reality altering events of Crisis on Infinite Earths, the JSA found themselves in the main DC Universe.

Although some of their history was changed, they were still World War II era vigilantes who had jumpstarted the age of heroes. As comics continued to be published in 1990’s and beyond, it was explained that the JSA’s powers and unique physiology had slowed their aging, allowing them to begin their career in the 1940’s, but still be in peak fighting condition in the age of smartphones.

Like most superhero groups, their roster has rotated over the years, but here are some of the characters you can expect to meet in Stargirl.

Starman: A privileged youngster who decided to fight for justice, armed with a powerful cosmic rod.

Stripesy: Starman’s sidekick and chauffer.

Doctor Mid-Nite: A physician superhero who happens to be blind.

Wildcat: A former boxer who decided to suit up to battle the underworld.

These characters either haven’t or have only rarely been seen in live action before, so you can probably see why fans are getting excited about Stargirl. Plus, these characters are just the tip of the iceberg. Other JSA members will likely be alluded to, including Jay Garrick, the original Flash. In many ways, the Justice Society is like a time capsule of DC’s Golden Age, only kept vibrant and relevant through generations of storytelling. They’re an important part of the DC Universe, and if you’d like to dive in and get to know them better, here’s a reading list for beginners that I put together for DCUniverse.com.

Or you could just watch Stargirl! There are tons of superhero teams out there, but the Justice Society are in a league of their own. As the elder statesman of the DC superhero community, they serve as an example for all of their peers. They are respected, and they are revered. In many ways, they are the architects of the modern DC Universe, and I can’t wait for the new generation of fans to meet them.

Stargirl premieres May 18 on DC Universe with new episodes up for streaming every Monday. height: 1076px;" />

The key to a great wrestler is an unforgettable entrance…and we all know Harley Quinn knows how to make that.

Harley’s BFF Alicia—otherwise known as “The Crusher”—has been murdered. Or at least, Harley’s convinced that's the case. For everyone else in the City of Angels, this underground wrestling legend took her own life, a victim of inner demons. However, there’s plenty of reason to doubt that, not the least of which is that the Jade Feather, the possibly magical emerald jewel that Alicia wore around her neck while wrestling, has gone missing. According to Alicia and her fans, the Jade Feather made the Crusher undefeatable in the ring. And what wrestler wouldn’t want that?

So, there’s motive, but figuring out who might have done it has proven pretty challenging, forcing Harley to resort to desperate measures—Booster Gold. The fame-addicted hero has been holing up in LA of late and crucially, believes that Harley’s friend may have been murdered. But Booster’s no Batman (that team-up was fifteen issues ago—pay attention, people!) and Harley’s no Superman, the latter of which is likely to be a problem in the upcoming Harley Quinn #72. After all, when last we left our sometimes hero, her plan to confront the commissioner of the league had left her squaring off in the ring against not one, not two, but pretty much every wrestler who suited up for the night. I mean, it is, but that’s not all it is. Super Here For… is traditionally a column about Superman and his adventures within the greater DC Universe. It’s a column that embraces and celebrates the continuity between the various Super-Family titles, and that seeks to highlight important events in the world of Superman that you might not be aware of if you’re not reading every book.

That’s what Super Here For… typically is, but as I don’t need to tell you, these aren’t typical times. There currently aren’t any in-universe Superman comics being published. However, that’s not to say there aren’t new Superman comics. You just won’t find them in print.

Superman: Man of Tomorrow is part of DC’s new wave of Digital First titles, meaning they’re released digitally before they hit comic shops. It’s written by Robert Venditti, who’s also currently writing Justice League (so in other words, Supes is in very good hands) and drawn by Paul Pelletier. And while it doesn’t tie in to what Brian Michael Bendis is doing with Superman and Action Comics, it has everything you love about the Man of Steel—large-scale action, witty Lois Lane banter, high stakes and a hopeful message. In short, it’s a great Superman comic that manages to stand alone quite nicely.

For someone who loves DC’s superhero universe and writes a column about shared continuity, I have a dirty little confession to make—I’m not always a huge fan of it. Don’t get me wrong, when done well, continuity is amazing. It feels like these stories we’re so invested in are part of something bigger and even more important. But it’s also a barrier to entry to new fans. The most recent issue of Action Comics featured a guest appearance by Young Justice. It was tons of fun for those of us who are familiar with the team and know that Bendis is also currently writing a Young Justice series, but it can be frustrating for newer or more casual fans who may only read Superman comics and who might not even know who Young Justice is. (And let’s be honest, friends, the fact that there’s a DC animated series of the same name that has absolutely nothing to do with the comic doesn’t make things any easier to understand.)

To be clear, I’m not saying that having Young Justice show up in Action Comics was the wrong thing to do. Just that some of the things that speak to longtime fans may also turn newer fans off. Leaning too deep into continuity can make comics less accessible and harder for new readers to get into, and that’s really not good for anyone in the long term.

Which is why is why it’s great to have comics that can speak to both kinds of fans, and that brings me back to Superman: Man of Tomorrow.

If you want to get technical, I’m not sure the book is out of continuity, but it’s sure not tied to it all that much. Superman’s secret identity is still very much under wraps in the first issue. Lex Luthor looks human and none of the recent Apex Lex craziness seems to have taken place. The supporting cast is all pretty well known—Lois Lane, Jimmy Olsen, Perry White and Lex Luthor. It’s all familiar territory to anyone who knows Superman, but it’s effective and best of all, it can be enjoyed by new fans or longtime ones in equal measure.

Plus, I couldn’t help but notice how well the story resonates right now.

In Superman: Man of Tomorrow #1, a famished Parasite drains power from all of Metropolis, causing a city-wide blackout. Citizens are scared and panicking, uncertain of what’s happening and how they’ll get through it, and Superman must come to grips with the fact that he can’t help them and also stop Parasite. But what he realizes, what he always realizes, is that when things are at their worst, the best people that a city can turn to isn’t a team of super-powered heroes—it’s themselves.

There’s one line on that page that really stands out to me, and I can’t help but apply it to right now. It’s Superman’s remark about how “if everyone looks after someone, then everyone will be looked after.”

It’s such a sweet, humane sentiment. We may not be in a blackout, but we’re in a crisis of a different sort and I’m reminded of how so many people right now are checking in on friends and family they haven’t seen or spoken to in a while, making sure they’re okay. We’re hearing about people delivering food to older neighbors. Landlords waiving rent. Small business owners forgoing their salaries to be able to pay their employees. Comic fans and creators raising money to keep their local comic shops afloat. In short, it’s a hard time and people are scared, but we’re looking out for each other, and we didn’t even need Superman to tell us to do it.

I’m not going to say that Superman: Man of Tomorrow is the perfect pandemic read or anything like that, but it’s a nice reminder of the good we’re capable of doing for each other. That’s a welcome message anytime, but now in particular. And coming in a standalone book that’s accessible to everyone, maybe a few more people who really need to hear that hopeful message right now will get to.

Sure, that’s aspirational, but that’s what Superman is, right?
?

Tim Beedle covers movies, TV and comics for DCComics.com, writes our monthly Superman column, "Super Here For...", and is a regular contributor to the Couch Club, our weekly television column.
